Podcast Launch

Building the Opening Night

It would be nice to have a bit of a crowd along for the opening night just to get the regular weekly podcasting off to a good start so I’ve created a facebook Event for this particular show which you can invite people to. I’ll also be making a post over on my long established blog site at DARnet Andy Roberts and one or two other places if I can think of them.

The podcast opening night will also be part of the Cafe Noodle July Ustream Festival, a great music community organised by Matt Stevens Loop.

I think it should be possible to embed the ustream show here on this site – so that’s something I’ll be having a go at too.

Regular Weekly Podcast

There’s a weekly podcast of live music which comes out of the Tuesday Night 7.00pm broadcast on Andy Roberts Ustream. It’s starting on July 6th and the weekly audio download should be ready and published by the following day, which will always be a Wednesday. The format of the podcast is flexible, but will normally be under 30 minutes  in duration, and less than 30Mb file size.

I had an idea about turning the Weekly Ustream.tv show into a podcast and started putting it into practice.

So last Tuesday instead of just recording some of the individual songs during the webcast for uploading to youTube, I recorded the whole half an hour or so of the show, songs and talking, and saved it using the ustream record system. I was fairly happy with the way that went from a performance point of view, it worked better for me than premeditated songs and faffing about with song tit;es description and tags in the middle of a broadcast. The experiment was to see what I could do with the resulting file. I downloaded it to my Mac – ustream provides a file in .flv format (Flash) and when I clicked on the downloaded file it opened an application I’d never seen before! Mpeg-streamclip was able to export in various formats including quicktime, Mpeg4, and audio only. So far so good. The quicktime version allowed me to quickly edit out the five songs from within the video and save them individually as .mov , all ready for uploading to youtube.

So this meant that with a small amount of effort I can use ustream for the live streaming show, record it all in one go, and still have the songs available in youtube for embedding elsewhere and so on.

But what about the podcast?

Ah, well I went away for a few days, so now I’m getting around to it.

Fortunately I still the rest of the month of June to get that boxed off, since this is still the prototyping period, and I’ve set the goal of getting started for real in July.

Andy Roberts does a weekly music webcast on a Tuesday Evening at 7.00pm UK time, every week. The idea behind this is to build up a regular discipline of performance, with a sense of audience including online interactions, to have fun, to rehearse songs which may be performed at Havering Folk Club on a Wednesday or elsewhere, and to document examples from the repertoire for the Andy Roberts Music youTube channel.

OK, so if you want to listen in and maybe join the live real time conversation on a Tuesday evening then all you have to do is get yourself over to ustream.tv and the Andy Roberts Music channel

You don’t have to log in just to listen, but if you do then you can join in the banter, be seen, and even make requests which stand a good chance of being granted.

Tuesday 29th September Andy Roberts Show

There should be a written report appearing here on the AndyRoberts.ME  blog within a few days of each show, which might include embedded video from either the YouTube Channle or the Ustream saved videos, whichever is most appropriate at the time. So  for example, on Tuesday 29th September we had a fun time with a session that lasted overall for nearly an hour including two new songs for the webcast, one of which was only recenty written by Andy Roberts, and the premier also of a new instrument the Saz. Home – Andy Roberts plays Roy Harper

There’s usually a Roy Harper song each week and this week it was “Home”, which is perhapas not one of Roy’s best ever compositions but it’s kind of funky to rock to sometimes. This take didn’t make it to youTube.

Motel Blues – Andy Roberts plays Loudon Wainwright

Motel Blues was one of Loudon Wainwright’s most popular songs at the time of Album 2 and it was one of the first performed live by Andy Roberts outside of the New Folk Cottage in Truro. It hasn’t seen the light of day at Havering Folk Club yet for some reason, but has featured in the Tuesday webcast before now.

Deep River Blues

Another first, in which Andy Roberts has a go at playing the delta blues classic “Deep River Blues” learned by ear from having heard Wizz Jones sing it somewhere. Check out some of teh other versions of this song on YouTube, especially Leo Kotke and Doc Watson.

Andy Roberts Plays The SAZ

At last, after months of messing about Andy finally gets his Turkish SAZ back in tune and plays some of the improvised tunes developed for the instrument. The Saz has seven strings arranged into three groups.
