Episode 26 is the last Andy Roberts music podcast for the year 2010. So since the podcasts began back in in July 2010, half a year has passed and just over one quarter of the expected 99 episodes have been published with around 125 songs performed making almost thirteen hours of acoustic guitar music and songs available here on the andyroberts.me website. This time next year, the project should have begun the final quarter.

So this week’s podcast was recorded a day early, on the Monday instead of Tuesday, not that that will make much difference to podcast subscribers, who mostly seem to like to download the show about one week after it’s been published, but for those of you who might on occasion turn up for the live show at 7.00pm, I won’t be there at all some Tuesdays, and this was one of them.

Knowing that I was effectively playing to an absent live audience had a curious effect on the performance, which I would describe as slightly more random in a creative sort of way, but Linda described as “less in the flow”. I was worried that it wouldn’t be good enough for me to want to put out at all, so I carried on after the half hour but in the end that just made it a bit more difficult to edit down to size, something I’d prefer not to do really.

So the original full length video file saved over on Ustream is not worth keeping really, due to the failing daylight at this time of year on a cloudy September evening, and me not having bothered to find the lamp. I kind of like lurking in the dark though

1) Century

A Millenium song written by Andy Roberts around 1980

“Century is my song for the Millennium, written in the early eighties looking forward to the year 2000. It’s called “Century” because the term Millennium wasn’t so much in use then, nobody much had started thinking about it yet, and I was still writing COBOL computer programs with 2 digit years”

2) I Am The Way

Song by Loudon Wainwright after Woodie Guthrie’s “Standing Down in New York Town”. Just noticed I played this not long ago, in podcast 7 oh well.

3) You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere

Bob Dylan Song from Greatest Hits Vol 2

4) Mondura Dam – Andy Roberts song

I may have played this recently, not sure now, but anyway here it is again but this time on the 12 string guitar. Music and Lyrics by Andy Roberts.

5) Norwegian Wood – Beatles

I kind of love/hate this song, so I’m trying to reinterpret it. The video below will be from a live performance at Havering Folk Club

6) Me and my Friend the Cat

One of the early songs by Loudon Wainwright – performed on his birthday. Happy birthday Loudon. Next time I’ll remember the lyrics, OK.

There’s a bit of an improvised introduction tune followed by four more original Andy Roberts music songs and a final Bob Dylan song in this weeks podcast, all played on the 12 string guitar. Two of the songs are  revivals from the Andy Roberts Tapes which was recorded in 1980, the other two are a bit newer, well Shifting Sands dates back to spring 2003 as far as I can remember and the Cajun cooking song was written on that Spain trip which immediately followed, so yes, two from the tapes and two from The Gernika album.

Another one from the tapes, and a kind of sequel to the above really. I’m not really completely comfortable with being the person who wrote this song, all that time ago, but the tune is catchy and the guitar runs were developed for the 12 string guitar, yes the same guitar.

Cajun Music Cajun Food

One of the Spanish songs, and still crying out for a fiddle and accordion but I do my best with the solo guitar.  From the album Gernika

Winter in Andalucia – Andy Roberts

Winter in Andalucia ( or Andalusia ) is one of the songs on my Sampler CD

I wonder if it might be good to have a simple index of which songs on each podcast somewhere, without the notes and videos etc. just for reference.

The first was to align with the previous night’s podcast episode 6 which was loosely themed around the fingerpicking blues style and I’ve been having the tune of Hesitation Blues going through my head ever since so that’s what I played.

Secondly, I’d been corresponding about The Wreckers Prayer so that got another airing. Linda wasn’t there to shoot any video so I’ll include some alternatives takes from the Andy Roberts Music youtube account in due course.

Andy Roberts does a weekly music webcast on a Tuesday Evening at 7.00pm UK time, every week. The idea behind this is to build up a regular discipline of performance, with a sense of audience including online interactions, to have fun, to rehearse songs which may be performed at Havering Folk Club on a Wednesday or elsewhere, and to document examples from the repertoire for the Andy Roberts Music youTube channel.

OK, so if you want to listen in and maybe join the live real time conversation on a Tuesday evening then all you have to do is get yourself over to ustream.tv and the Andy Roberts Music channel

You don’t have to log in just to listen, but if you do then you can join in the banter, be seen, and even make requests which stand a good chance of being granted.

Tuesday 29th September Andy Roberts Show

There should be a written report appearing here on the AndyRoberts.ME  blog within a few days of each show, which might include embedded video from either the YouTube Channle or the Ustream saved videos, whichever is most appropriate at the time. So  for example, on Tuesday 29th September we had a fun time with a session that lasted overall for nearly an hour including two new songs for the webcast, one of which was only recenty written by Andy Roberts, and the premier also of a new instrument the Saz. Home – Andy Roberts plays Roy Harper

There’s usually a Roy Harper song each week and this week it was “Home”, which is perhapas not one of Roy’s best ever compositions but it’s kind of funky to rock to sometimes. This take didn’t make it to youTube.

Motel Blues – Andy Roberts plays Loudon Wainwright

Motel Blues was one of Loudon Wainwright’s most popular songs at the time of Album 2 and it was one of the first performed live by Andy Roberts outside of the New Folk Cottage in Truro. It hasn’t seen the light of day at Havering Folk Club yet for some reason, but has featured in the Tuesday webcast before now.

Deep River Blues

Another first, in which Andy Roberts has a go at playing the delta blues classic “Deep River Blues” learned by ear from having heard Wizz Jones sing it somewhere. Check out some of teh other versions of this song on YouTube, especially Leo Kotke and Doc Watson.

At last, after months of messing about Andy finally gets his Turkish SAZ back in tune and plays some of the improvised tunes developed for the instrument. The Saz has seven strings arranged into three groups.
